Things Are Getting So Hexic (2)

May 8th, 2008

I am totally addicted to Hexic 2.  I don’t remember downloading it before but I was going through the Xbox 360 and realized that I had supposedly downloaded some games from the Live Arcade.  I thought I would give the Xbox 360 a chance to be something besides a flashy DVD player and Hexic 2 is the perfect way to do that in all its high definition jewel destroying bliss.  When did it get dark outside…  Yes.  It is that good. ;)

Night Elf Mohawk

November 22nd, 2007

I don’t care if you play video games, the new WoW commercials from Blizzard are hilarious. ;) I want a Night Elf Mohawk.

Puzzle Quest

July 5th, 2007

I don’t know why but I recently started playing the Nintendo DS (Dual Screen) and the Sony PSP (Playstation Portable). I wouldn’t consider myself any type of a console gamer but I was *very* surprised to discover how great of a distraction they can be. I’m particularly addicted to Puzzle Quest, which is a combination of an RPG and Bejeweled. It is the perfect way to kill time (literally, haha) instead of watching TV.

Joichi Ito on WoW

January 8th, 2007

I know the majority of you could care less about World of Warcraft, but the notes from Ito’s presentation at 23C3 are an interesting read if you are slightly curious about why there are 8 million people paying $15.00/month to play a video game.

Burning Crusade Delay

October 26th, 2006

I wouldn’t say that I am surprised that Blizzard decided to delay the expansion for World of Warcraft. It is probably for the best considering nobody I know would get any work done before Christmas. ;) I imagine they planned it, but EA was smart enough to release Battlefield 2142 just before the initial expansion release date for WoW. I pulled my media PC off of the plasma so that I could play. ;)

MLG Halo Contract

June 26th, 2006

I am totally in the wrong industry. :) MLG has offered $1,250,000.00 to the #1 team and top Halo player in the world. It is the first contract in the industry and if it is a sign of the future I think I may spend more time playing Xbox 360. You have to wonder what the next generation “athlete” will actually be like, and if the professional athletes who are so popular at the moment will be replaced by kids who spend every waking moment online.

Virtual ATM

May 2nd, 2006

In the latest scheme from the people behind Project Entropia, you are now able to exchange their virtual funds through an ATM for real world currency.

“We are creating the next level of the online experience.” Jan Welter, Project Entropia
Now, I “hypothetically” know a bit about the virtual currency underground, but I still can’t imagine myself acquiring a virtual “resort” for $100,000USD which one of the denizens of Entropia did last year.

WoW, I would be rich. As a renowned Korean once said… “armor, staff, gold, okay.” ;)

Chess

March 28th, 2006

We started playing online chess today. We play on Red Hot Pawn because you don’t have to play your moves instantly. You can move once every three days if you want. ;) It sends you an email when you get an invite and when your opponent makes a move. I use the username ‘thre3′ if you feel like playing. ;)

Fun: Defined

March 1st, 2006

fun (fn) n.

  1. A source of enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure.
  2. Enjoyment; amusement: have fun at the beach.
  3. Playful, often noisy, activity.

Gamasutra has an fascinating article on the “values” of massive multiplayer games like World of Warcraft. With 6 million active accounts, WoW is the most popular MMO in history. I know the majority of the people I know have at least one character.

The article makes some interesting points about the lessons that WoW teaches the players, in particular the kids whose parents don’t care what they’re doing as long as they aren’t playing Grand Theft Auto (regarded as the most violent game online).“If you invest more time than someone else, you “deserve” rewards. People who invest less time “do not deserve” rewards. This is an absurd lesson that has no connection to anything I do in the real world.”

You don’t really need to enjoy video games to appreciate the article, I think it says a lot about the direction society could be going if these “virtual worlds” are any example.
