The Ending (x20)

July 13th, 2008

TimesOnline has a list of the 20 greatest movie endings (may contain spoilers). I don’t know who compiled their list but anybody who included “The Blair Witch Project” needs to have their head examined. Their #1 is acceptable though. Here is my list, in no particular order… Usual Suspects, The Mist, Smokin’ Aces (the musical score anyways), Se7en, Empire Strikes Back, Boondock Saints, Le Grand Bleu, Revolver, Fight Club (or anything else by M. Night), The Prestige, The Game, Suicide Kings, Reservoir Dogs, Magnolia, Unforgiven, Das Boot, Blade Runner (Director’s Cut with the soliloquy by Roy), Basic, The Machinist, Eastern Promises.  I imagine if I looked through my DVDs I would most likely come up with a completely different list but these will do for now. :-)

Wabbits Wuin Evweything

Walt Disney has released the short cartoon that plays before WALL-E.  We haven’t seen either yet but I thought I would link it here for anyone who is interested.

Colin Farrell, A Class Act

September 13th, 2007

The Toronto Sun has a fantastic article on Colin Farrell taking a well known homeless guy (”Stress”) on a total shopping spree, then set him up with some cash, and a place to live for the rest of the year.  Supposedly he dropped $10K.  I hope the guy takes advantage and gets off the street.

Han Shot First

August 2nd, 2007

George Lucas recently caused quite a stir online when pictures were released with him wearing a “Han Shot First” t-shirt. I suppose this may not be amusing to the majority of you, unless you happen to have an interest in Star Wars.

Thundercats: The Movie

June 7th, 2007

Wow.  It has only be optioned but there is an actual possibility that there will be a Live Action Thundercats movie.  I don’t know if any of you watched Thundercats when you were younger, but it was right up there with ‘Mask’ as far as cartoons. :)  I am guessing that they’re waiting to see how successful (or unsuccessful) the Transformers movie is first. :)

Live Free or Die Hard

April 11th, 2007

“John McClane (Willis) takes on an Internet-based terrorist organization who is systematically shutting down the United States.”  I don’t think anything more needs to be said about the upcoming Live Free or Die Hard.  You can check out the trailer on Yahoo.  Ironically enough it stars the “Mac” guy from the commercials (haha).

GMOW

March 29th, 2007

I don’t know when Le Grand Bleu (Big Blue) was released but it was quite a while ago, and so I am pretty excited about the upcoming film, The Greater Meaning of Water. Supposedly there is a storyline somewhere in the film, but it is the underwater cinematography that is the true star of the film. The preview is visually stunning, so I can’t wait to see the full dvd. I wouldn’t say that I am an avid free diver, but I have followed the sport relatively closely since I first watched Luc Besson’s Le Grand Bleu. You may know him as either the director or producer of such films as The Fifth Element, Transporter, Unleashed, and of course, The Professional (Léon). The cast and crew of GMOW are actually former Olympic athletes, so it should be interesting to see how they handle acting. Deeper Blue has a great article on the film, and some information on free diving.  I can’t wait for it to be released.

Madness!?

March 14th, 2007

THIS. IS. SPARTA! We went to see 300 at IMAX today. Wow. It was the first time I saw a film on IMAX (outside of documentaries at the Musée canadien des civilisations. They had a crazy light/sound show at the beginning (instead of previews) that explained about the screen, and the sound system, and the 1 ton projector. We decided that if we ever get a theatre we’ll make sure it has the 12,000W sound system. ;)

The film itself was remarkable. I just finished reading Thermopylae, so it was very interesting to see the story “brought to life” so to speak, and the director effectively brought Frank Miller’s graphic novel style to the big screen. While the story wasn’t exactly accurate, at least from what I read, it was still interesting to see the phalanx in reality. The battle itself was quite important though, as it helped usher in the world’s first democracy. After you see the film, you should read this article by an Ephraim Lytle, assistant professor of hellenistic history at the University of Toronto (Emphasis on reading the article AFTER you see the film, as there are some spoilers mentioned).

I imagine most people won’t care that much about the history behind the film, but that’s alright since the cinematography and fight choreography are inspiring. It appears that the first blockbuster of the “summer” is already here.

Silly Ephialtes.

RVD2

March 4th, 2007

Wow. I saw the first one a while ago on YouTube, but the high def version of RVD2 is nothing short of remarkable. If you don’t feel like downloading the high def, you can check out the low res version on YouTube. I think I may seriously have to look into making a fight scene video. Darth Phoenix…
